An Alternative to Traditional First-Year Orientation Programs: The Wilderness Experience as a Rite of Passage

Abstract


Students who take part in wilderness orientations have the opportunity to undergo a rite of passage into college life, a symbolic journey from the old to the new, where they can explore themselves in isolation from the outside world in order to find something within that can carry them through the challenging times that await.
